CHENNAI: The state government has recommended to allot free bicycles to more than 21,000 beneficiaries studying in state-run Industrial Training Institutes.
State Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa sanctioned Rs 6.36 crore for offering free bicycles as a large section of students in ITIs come from economically poor background.
It is part of a pro-student initiative and also in line to a current scheme of offering bicycles to school students who cover considerable distance to reach their institutions. This move would benefit 21,925 ITI students.
Currently, the state government is already offering series of incentives to school and college-going students consisting supply of free laptops.
