NEW DELHI: DAE (Department of Atomic Energy) has announced that monazite thorium containing beach sand mineral can only be produced
by State-run IREL and no other private firm shall be given any license for the production of this mineral.
In a statement, DAE said “We are not giving any license to any private entity to produce, extract or export the monazite or thorium.
The right to perform all these activities for domestic as well as international market has been given to IREL (Indian Rare Earths Ltd.),an undertaking of DAE in Public sector.”
The decision has been taken by the DAE in context of claims the many Indian private firms are exporting monazite in huge amounts
thereby causing great loss to the stock of thorium. Monazite is a crucial thorium ore that is in utilised in the last stages of the 3-phase nuclear programme of DAE. Monazite is a licensed mineral and cannot be exported without prior permission.
