NEW DELHI: Lauding UPA government's move to permit FDI in multi-brand retail, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has stated that the decision will prove beneficial for the farmers as it will remove the role of middlemen from the supply chain and also lead to generation new jobs.

While addressing the national executive of Indian Youth Congress, Rahul stated that FDI in retail will be helpful for farmers store their produce safely for longer duration and it will help ensure best value for crops.

The Congress leader is on a two-day visit, which started yesterday, stated that about 60-70% of all perishable products in India usually rot due to the absence of proper storage facilities.

The situation is slated to change once FDI in retail makes way in India.

Usually, the farmers don not get good price for their produce since the middlemen in the 'Mandis' would purchase from them at low rates and sell the same at higher price in cities.
