CHENNAI: The state capital of Kerala also witnessed the protests against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project. The members of different parties registered their objection by staging road blockade in various parts of the city.
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi founder and Lok Sabha MP Thol Thirumavalavan and MDMK leader Mallai Sathya were among the scores of agitators who were arrested for staging roadblocks in different parts of the city. Smaller outfits like MMK also staged protest.
The protestors denounced yesterday's police firing in Tutircorin district which claimed the life of a fisherman. They also opposed the loading of uranium fuel at the nuclear plant in Tirunelveli district.
Yesterday, the anti-nuclear protests turned violent with protestors clashing with police, resulting in lathi-charge and firing of teargas shells by police at Idinthakarai in Tirunelveli district and firing at Tuticorin.
State chief minister Jayalalithaa had requested the people of Idinthakarai to maintain calm and asked for the cooperation. She assured them that the venture being implemented in collaboration with Russia was safe.
