CHENNAI: Worried about the poor conditions of the farmers community here due to the fallout of the Cauvery crisis, Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan has requested Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to intervene and also urge Karnataka to release water from its dams to Tamil Nadu so that samba crop can be saved.

As compared to 2011, Tamil Nadu has seen 50% less rainfall during this year and if the conditions continue for long in the Delta region, there are major chances of drought.

Karnataka must follow the decision of Singh, as head of the Cauvery River Authority, urging it to release 9,000 cusecs of water, which also bagged Supreme Court's endorsement.
