NAY PYI TAW: In support of Myanamar’s movement towards full democracy, Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh is to meet the Opposition Leader, Aung San Suu Kyi. The External Affairs Minister, S.M. Krishna said , “Suu Kyi is one of the important leaders of Myanmar and it’s natural for the Prime Minister to receive her with due courtesy and convey our best wishes for a national reconciliation for a democratic process to blossom in this country’’.
With respect to commitments from the Indian side, Krishna said, “Who are we to make more commitments to the democratic process here. This is a free, sovereign country with whom we have diplomatic and other relationships”.
Dr Singh is going to meet India-educated 66-year-old Nobel Laureate Suu Kyi after his talks with the Myanmar President, Thein Sein, who had initiatated a series of political reform last year. The meeting indicates that India wants reiteration of their ties with the activist after facing international criticism for their support of Myanmar’s former military junta in the past.
