CHANDIGARH: Punjab's paddy procurement in Punjab may cross 13-million tonnes mark in the current marketing season (October 2012-September 2013) with the help of higher arrivals.
Till now, government agencies have purchased 12.7 million tonnes, nearly 7% extra as compared to last year’s 11.9 million tonnes via 1,770 mandis and procurement centres across Punjab.
Even after poor monsoon, farmers in Punjab planted paddy on 28 lakh hectares.
Paddy procurement had commenced mid-October and it has entered last phase in Punjab. It may last another week. Punjab contributes about 30% of the rice bought by government for Central pool.
In Haryana, the procurement by State-agencies is on the verge of completion.
