CHENNAI: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) urged Union and the State governments to conduct the election immediately and restore the autonomous structure of the Medical Council of India (MCI).
IMA demands that the Clinical Establishment Act should be withdrawn as it takes away the common citizen rights accorded by the constitution and the central government’s proposed National Commission for Human Resources in Health (NCHRH) Bill, which puts the entire power to regulate medical education in the country in the hands of a few central government representatives, should not be passed and withdrawn.
Dr N Appa Rao, national chairman of IMA, DR C Srinivasa Raju, chairman, IMA IT Committee said that for developing a national consensus and for improving the quality of medical education, democracy should be restored in the basic structure of the Council, so elections is necessary. The IMA has even warned that if their demands are not met then they are going on an all India strike for the whole day on June 25.
