NEW DELHI: With the aim to develop strategy to strengthen crop output in the coming rabi season, the two-day 'National Conference on Agriculture For Rabi Campaign 2012' is slated to start on September 24.

The conference will stress on how to make the best use of late rains. Kharif 2012 started with delayed onset of Monsoon along with the subdued activity in the sowing period of June-July which witnessed improvement gradually in August and continuing in September.

This has lead to the delayed sowing and some area remained unsown which is bound to impact the production of kharif crops especially coarse cereals. It has offered a new opportunity for extra coverage under rabi crops and the prospects has fortified with rains in September. It is important to capitalise upon the available soil moisture via timely sowing and placing the seed at needed depth and duly supported by right amount of nutrition and plant protection.

The Indian Council for Agriculture Research (ICAR) has unveiled with crop and area-specific proposals for wheat and other winter crops. These comprise use of high-yielding varieties, disease control and improved agronomic practices.

Attention will be given to maximising output of oilseeds and pulses. Apart from general deliberation, a separate session is slated to be held with wight states mainly on these crops. .
