NEW DELHI: With the aim to control the flow of growing market from spurious medicines, Indian government has proposed to establish more drug testing laboratories in different states. This information was revealed by Minister of State for Health Sudip Bandopadhyay on the sideline of a conference on health sector here today.

Bandopadhyay said, “So, regulation has to be followed strictly. Anyone found manufacturing spurious drugs, his entire factory should be shut. Our plan is to strengthen states' health department with more manpower. Secondly, we want to open drug testing labs in different locations including in Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat and other states where majority of drugs are produced.”

As production licenses to most drug manufacturers are issued by the states, the Health Ministry mulling to enhance state departments first.

A recent sample collection claimed that 4.7% of the 50,000 drugs were spurious or sub-standard quality.
