FARIDABAD: General Motors is mulling to source nearly 95% of its components from the local manufacturers for the newer models, said Mr Ashwani Muppasani, Vice President, Global Purchasing and Supply Chain, General Motors India at a Federation of Indian Micro and Small and Medium Enterprises (FISME) event here.
Mr Muppasani is hoping that the firm is hoping that the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) suppliers to follow the strict global quality and also be certified for technical specification (TS certified), it is meant for engineering industries.
Moreover, the firm is planning to raise the present production capacity from 150,000 units to 300,000 units by 2014 and envisages a stronger role for the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The SME sector is worried about the surging number of auto component imports.
The data by the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) display that the auto component imports has risen by 8.5% to $30.2 billion in 2010-11.
