NEW DELHI: Agriculture Ministry is working on a proposal in consultation with various ministries to distribute the product under different welfare schemes like Midday Meal Scheme, so as to mitigate with the surplus stock of milk powder in the country.
As per the minister, there is a huge stock of 1.12 lakh tonnes of milk powder and hence the Agriculture Ministry is discussing with various ministries to chalk out the ways to use this surplus powder in various welfare schemes.
The ministry is also discussing with External Affairs Ministry, distributing milk powder along with foodgrains as part of foreign aid to the developing countries.
The consultation has already been initiated with various Departments including Women and Child Development.
The surplus stock of milk powder has accumulated due to poor marketing of liquid milk, Pawar said, “The real problem is that cooperatives and private people are procuring milk but not improving their marketing. So, they convert milk into powder. When in surplus, they come to us. On one hand, we are getting reports of shortage of liquid milk, on the other side, there is too much milk and too much powder. These people are not making any efforts to improve marketing.”
