Uttar Pradesh : Mulayam wins a vote of confidence |
 |
In a sudden political move, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav sprang a surprise in the State Assembly on Friday (Feb. 25) by proposing and winning a vote of confidence along with the Motion of Thanks to the Governor for his Address. Observers say with this, he has warded off the danger of a no confidence motion coming up in the House within six months. According to the Rules of Business of the Assembly, the Opposition cannot now bring a no confidence motion against the Mulayam Singh Government for the next six months.
Assembly Speaker Mata Prasad Pande announced that the vote of confidence had been adopted by a voice vote even though the BJP members opposed the sudden move by the Treasury Benches. BSP members were not present in the House.
Congress legislature party leader Pramod Tiwari claimed that the way the confidence motion was brought in the House proved that the Mulayam Singh Government was in trouble. BJP leader Lalji Tandon said the confidence vote has violated the norms of the House proceedings.
