UPA : Manmohan Singh unveils Government’s report card |
 |
The Prime Minister has unveiled the report card of the United Progressive Alliance seeking to inform the nation about the steps taken to carry out the commitments in the National Common Minimum Programme. The Prime Minister’s media advisor said the report has been conceived as a document to complement the budget. Henceforth the report would be released at the end of every calender year. Christened “Report to the People-I”, the document was released by the Prime Minister ahead of the UPA-Left Coordination committee Meeting held in New Delhi on March 1.
In the report, the Government claims to have fulfilled more than half the specific promises made in the CMP. Offering an update on its policies and programmes between May 2004 and February 2005, the report claims that many of the other promises made were being implemented.
DMK calls for action against Congress Minister
The DMK, one of the major partners of the ruling United Progressive Alliance at the Centre, has demanded that the Congress should take action against Union Minister E.V.K.S. Elangovan for criticising party chief M. Karunanidhi in an “inappropriate” manner. A strategy committee meeting of the DMK in Chennai condemned the comments made by the Congress Minister without naming him. A resolution released after the meeting said that Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had spoken to the DMK chief and assured him that such undesirable incidents would not happen again. The Committee believed in the assurances given, but sought action against the Minister.
DMK leader Karunanidhi said the Congress high command was free to snap ties with his party, but expressed the hope that the former would not “repeat” in Tamil Nadu the rift in the UPA Alliance in Bihar - to which he attributed the “poor showing” by Lalu Prasad Yadav’s party.
The DMK, however, appears unlikely to rock the UPA at the Centre for now after Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh rang up Karunanidhi. Elangovan too has expressed regret.
