Tripura : Singh lauds Left for law & order
News Behind The News

October 31, 2005

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who visited the Communist-ruled state of Tripura last week, has praised the ruling Left Front for its handling of law and order in the insurgency-infested state.

Dr. Singh, who visited the state to lay the foundation stone of a power plant and the Agartala Government Medical College, laid stress on the development of Tripura through infrastructure, investments and the Centre’s Look East policy.

A wave of jubilation erupted among the 30,000-odd people waiting for him in the scorching sun at Agartala airport the three air force helicopters appeared on the horizon.

Commending the ONGC for installing the power plant, Singh said it would boost employment and infrastructure development. “The Rs 3,999-crore project will alter the face of the state and make it a favoured destination for investment also,” he added.

Singh reiterated his commitment to overall development of the Northeast and outlined the initiatives taken by the UPA government for closer economic ties among the Northeast, the SAARC countries and Southeast Asia. He promised to make up for Tripura’s “deprivation” over the years “by sanctioning more development projects and funds”.

On the problem of insurgency, he said border fencing would help check the militants’ trans-border movement.

After laying the foundation stone at Palatana, Singh flew to Agartala to lay the foundation stone of the new building complex of the Agartala Government Medical College.
