Tripura : Rebels lay down arms
News Behind The News

July 12, 2004

For the first time in the history of tribal insurgency in Tripura, surrendered militants deposited a highly sophisticated 51 mm mortar with a range of 800 metres. The militants said many of their colleagues were keen to rejoin the mainstream of life but could not do so because they were unable to bring arms and ammunition.

Last week’s surrender took place at BSF headquarters in Salbagan on July 9. Two area commanders and a cadre formally laid down arms to IG (Tripura, Mizoram, Cachar) Alexander Daniel.

Puspa Tripura (28), NLFT area commander in Kamalpur subdivision, Tamajesh Debbarma (31), Tiger Force area commander in Khowai and Tiger Force cadre Nikhil Debbarma (26), operating in the hilly areas of Khowai subdivision, surrendered one 7.62 self-loading rifle (SLR), one 51mm mortar, three Chinese high explosive bombs used in ambushes and large quantities of Chinese ammunition for SLRs and other weapons.
