National Liberation Front of Tripura militants gunned down three BSF jawans and a civilian and looted arms and ammunition in an ambush at Chandrakantapara under the Raisyabari police station in Dhalai district last week. Combing operations by the paramilitary force could not net any of the rebels who are believed to have crossed over into the bordering Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh. Senior BSF officials, headed by Inspector-General S.C. Dutta, rushed to the spot. Police and paramilitary forces, led by SP (Dhalai) Arindam Nath, also launched combing operations but no arrests have been made so far. Sources said the assault on the BSF was the biggest attack on security forces since Janaury 14 this year when two CRPF jawans had been killed by the NLFT in Thalibari, under Amarpur subdivision of South Tripura. Two rebel outfits join hands In another development, the two banned militant outfits of Tripura, the All Tripura Tiger Force and the National Liberation Front of Tripura, have joined hands to take on the Left Front government. The outfits have come together to organise ‘Mission-2008’, a codename for their joint operations aimed at dislodging the Left Front government in Assembly elections scheduled to be held next year. Two secret meetings were held at the Tiger Force base camp in Satcherri, under Bangladesh’s Habiganj district, and in a plush apartment in Dhaka rented by the NLFT. Leaders of both groups decided to join hands for a renewed offensive as well as to regain areas lost to security forces. Highly-placed sources in the Special Branch (Intelligence Wing) of state police said the outfits have joined hands with an eye on the forthcoming elections to village committees in Autonomous District Council (ADC) areas. The elections are likely to be held early next year. “They are desperate to ensure that candidates sponsored by them win since the village committees have access to substantial funds for development”, a source said, adding that the militants have their eyes on the funds flow.
