Tripura : Militants lay down arms
News Behind The News

January 09, 2006

Thirteen militants, including two women, of the fast diminishing Joshua faction of the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) laid down arms on January 6 in Agartala. Led by the factional commander, Rajesh Debbarma, the rebels surrendered before the general-officer-commanding, 3 Corps, Lt Gen. J.U. Shah and DGP G.M. Srivastava at the Assam Rifles (21 sector) headquarters.

They deposited three 7.62 self-loading rifles, one .303 rifle, five 9 mm revolvers, five Chinese grenades and 300 rounds of ammunition. Of the 13 militants, Rajesh, Janabir and Sanjit had rewards of Rs 2 lakh each on their heads.

The surrendered rebels will undergo one-year vocational courses as part of Delhi’s rehabilitation package.

Gen. Shah described the surrender as a major success and result of sustained counter-insurgency operations by Assam Rifles in Khowai, Ratanpur and Behalabari areas of Khowai subdivision. The GOC expressed hope that in the New Year, many more militants will lay down arms, sounding the death-knell of insurgency in Tripura.
