Tripura: Manik Sarkar takes oath as CM

Tripura’s sixth Left-Front Council of Ministers headed by Manik Sarkar was sworn in at a simple but impressive ceremo¬ny at Raj Bhavan. The Ministry has twelve members, all of whom are of Cabinet rank. Governor Dinesh Nandan Sahay administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new ministers.



The Congress, the State’s principal opposition, boycotted the ceremony in protest against incidents of post-poll violence. CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat and the party’s Polit¬buro member Brinda Karat were present at the meeting. Senior LF leaders, along with leaders of some other political parties, senior offi¬cials, trading community leaders and intellectuals also attended the oath-taking ceremony.



Besides Chief Minister Sarkar, members of his Council of Ministers who were administered the oath of office are Anil Sarkar, Aghore Devbarma, Badal Chaudhuri, Tapan Chakraborti, Jitendra Chaudhury, Manik Dey, Khagendra Jamatiya, Joy Govinda Dev Ray, Manindra Reang, s Binita Nath and Shahid Chaudhuri.



Sarkar, a CPI-M Politburo member is heading the Minis¬try for the third time in succession. Eight members of the outgo¬ing Cabinet were reinducted into the present ministry which has four new faces.



In the new ministry, the CPI-M has 10 ministers while the RSP and the CPI have one minister each.



The Left Front Government first came into office in Tripura on 5 January, 1978. Veteran Marxist leader Nripen Chakraborti was the Chief Minister for the first two terms.



The Congress-TUJS coalition ruled the State between 1988 and 1993. Dasarath Dev, the noted tribal leader of the region headed the Third Front Ministry.
