Tripura : Left front splits, Forward Bloc, CPI(M) part ways
News Behind The News

January 28, 2008

After 30 long years, the fabled unity in the Left Front in Tripura has cracked, with the CPI(M) and the Forward Bloc going it alone in the Assembly polls.

The CPI(M) state committee dismissed the Forward Bloc’s demand for three seats as “unacceptable,” closing the door on any further negotiation on the issue.

CPI(M) party spokesman and senior leader Gautam Das said that the Forward Bloc’s demand had been rejected and both the parties would have to contest separately unless the latter accepted the one seat allotted to it.

“We have made this clear to the state Forward Bloc leader¬ship and we will announce before January 30 the candidate for Town Bardowali Assembly seat allotted to the Forward Bloc as part of the longstanding arrangement,” said Das.

Addressing mediapersons, the state secretary of the Forward Bloc, Shyamal Roy said: “We have taken the decision with the approval of our central leadership and hence we cannot go back now.”

Roy said that the national general secretary of the Forward Bloc, Debabrata Biswas, had taken up the issue with CPI(M)’s Prakash Karat but the impasse could not be broken.

He said the party would shortly announce its nominees for the Assembly seats.

“We will be the deciding factor in the upcoming elections, and the CPI(M) will be responsible for breaking the Left Front in Tripura,” Roy added.

Chief minister Manik Sarkar will file his nomination for the Dhanpur Assembly constituency in Sonamura sub-division on January 30.
