Tripura : Human rights violations in prisons |
 |
According to newspaper reports, life in prisoners in the Communist-ruled state of Tripura is grim for those crammed in the dark cells of state jails.
Altogether 694 prisoners, including undertrials, are lodged in Agartala Central Jail, which has accommodation for only 355 prisoners.
The statewide statistics are equally dismal. More than 2,500 prisoners are huddled in 11 jails in the district and sub-divisional towns, which were built to accommodate only 1,065.
Moreover, 169 inmates, 101 of them tribals, who have already been granted bail by courts, cannot leave prisons because there is no one to sign their bonds. Many of these illiterate tribals were suspected to have links with banned militant outfits.
For the last three years, the state government hasn’t spent even 10 per cent of the Rs 20-crore grant given by the Centre for modernisation of jails across the state.
Opposition leader Ratanlal Nath alleged gross human rights violations in Tripura jails.
