Tripura CM’s volte face over terrorist camps in Bangladesh
News Behind The News

September 29, 2003

Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar has landed himself in a soup following a statement he made in Bangladesh on September 18.

Sarkar has regularly issued statements over the past few years on how banned militants of Tripura were running camps in Bangladesh.

However, in a volte face, he denied having ever accused Dhaka of backing rebels. He absolved the Bangladesh government of responsibility for bases and camps run by militants of the Northeast.

This has provoked a serious reaction from the Congress. Leader of the Opposition Ratanlal Nath, at a press meet in his official chamber today, accused Sarkar of acting against the national interest and exceeding his brief.
