Tripura : Chief Minister demands separate IAS cadre
News Behind The News

July 30, 2007

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has demanded abolition of joint Manipur-Tripura cadre for IAS, IPS and IFS officers and constitution of a separate cadre for the state.

The demand was raised by Sarkar during his meeting with the members of Second Administrative Reforms Commission (ARC), headed by Veerappa Moily. The ARC team was in Tripura on a two-day visit last week.

Sarkar met Moily in his chamber at the state secretariat. “The system of cadre management by the Centre must be changed at once. Tripura is a separate state with its distinctive socio-economic and political realities and it is imperative that a separate cadre for Tripura is built soon,” he said.

The Chief Minister said the Centre has fixed the number of IAS officers for Tripura at 102. At present, however, there are only 14 officers in Tripura. “Unfortunately most of the IAS officers do not want to work in Tripura and given the chance, they join multi-national companies and corporations with fat salaries,” Sarkar said.

The Chief Minister said members of the administrative re¬forms commission had agreed with his contention on separation of the cadre. Sarkar added that he had briefed the commission members about the problem of insurgency in Tripura and how it was being tackled. “They saw the problem and appreciated the way we have tackled it,” he said.
