Thai traders keen on N-E investment |
 |
The troubled north-eastern region of India is gradually becoming the centre of attraction for the business community abroad. Altogether 15 companies from Thailand have evinced a keen interest in investing in the Northeast. Disclosing this, M.K. Saharia, chairman of Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Northeast Initiative said the chamber has received “concrete enquiries” from 15 private companies of Thailand about possible investments in the north-eastern region.
Many of these companies deal with infrastructure development, a field in which the
Northeast has been lagging behind. Others deal with food processing and allied fields.
Karnataka-based private companies had also made similar enquiries for investing in the information technology and vocational training sectors, Saharia said. It is now upto the respective state governments to try and convert these enquiries into investments. The ICC will play the role of facilitator, he added.
A Thai business delegation, along with the Commerce Minister of Thailand, is expected to attend the third North East Business Summit to be held in New Delhi.
The ICC and Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) are organising the summit to promote the North East as an ideal investment destination.
Special investment hubs will be set up at the summit venue to facilitate interaction between investors and top government officials and ministers of the states.
