In a landmark verdict, the Supreme Court on Thursday, April 10, upheld the central law providing for 27 per cent reservation for the other backward classes (OBCs) in educational institutions of higher learning including Indian Institutes of Management and Indian Institutes of Technology. At the same time, a five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan ruled that the creamy layer among the backward classes would not get the reservation benefit.
