Security Council expands Afghan mission |
 |
The UN Security Council has voted unanimously to give an expanded UN political mission in Afghanistan the authority to coordinate civilian and military efforts that are intended to bolster the Afghan Government as it confronts escalating violence. Renewing the mandate for another year, the resolution gives the mission and Kai Eide of Norway, the UN special representative in Afghanistan, responsibility for providing “more coherent support by the international community to the Afghan government” and leading the UN in a “strengthened and expanded presence throughout the country.”
In the meanwhile, a suicide car bomb killed three NATO soldiers, including two Danes, an interpreter and three Afghan civilians in southern Afghanistan. The Taliban have threatened to step up their campaign of suicide attacks this year to wear down Afghan and Western public support for the presence of foreign troops in the country.
