Rahul Mahajan episode : BJP dilemma
News Behind The News

June 12, 2006

There is no end to the dilemma faced by the BJP on the travails of late senior leader Pramod Mahajan’s son, Rahul Mahajan. Two senior leaders Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Kalraj Mishra, straying from the party line, visited Rahul ahajan, at the Tughlaq Road police station on Thursday, June 8, where he was being detained at the time. The show of solidarity with the Mahajan family came within days of the party taking care to announce that the episode was a family affair and that while the BJP is sympathetic to the Mahajan family, it has nothing to do with the circumstances leading to the arrest of Rahul and the death of Pramod Mahajan’s secretary, Vivek Moitra.

Meanwhile, a Delhi court has put off pronouncement of an order on a bail application by Rahul Mahajan in the drug abuse case till tomorrow, June 13, to allow the prosecution to take a clear cut stand on the quantity of drugs

Rahul Mahajan had allegedly procured, consumed

and distributed.

Earlier, Rahul Mahajan had been sent to 14-

days judicial custody after a two-day police

remand. He is now in Tihar central jail in Delhi.

Laboratory tests on blood samples of Rahul

Mahajan have indicated that he took a cocktail of

drugs including possibly cocaine. The viscera of

Vivek Moitra indicated that he had consumed

several drugs apart from alcohol.

The police also registered a case against

Apollo Hospital, where Rahul Mahajan was taken

after he collapsed at his residence, for allegedly

fudging records. The hospital is also reported to

have suppressed the findings of lab tests indicating

traces of heroin in Rahul Mahajan’s urine.
