Prime Minister’s action plan for central ministries
News Behind The News

February 14, 2005

The Prime Minister has spelt out a six-month Action Plan for 46 ministries and departments of the Central Government. The major steps proposed in the Action Plan include scrapping of subsidies and tackling terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and the north-eastern states. The Action Plan is designed to give a push to the implementation of the promises made in the common minimum programme (CMP). The implementation of policies in the thrust areas identified by the Prime Minister would be monitored by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on a regular basis.

The thrust areas for implementation outline a roadmap for both economic and other ministries. Enacting a model and comprehensive law to deal with criminal violence and encouraging states to adopt it, implementing the J & K Reconstruction Plan 2004, putting in place the National Disaster Management Act and closely monitoring Naxalites are among the priorities listed under the Home Ministry. Other thrust areas for the ministry include finalising within the next six months an approach to rehabilitate all Tsunami-affected persons at both national and state levels, including Andaman and Nicobar islands. Putting in place a Tsunami detection and warning system is an area of focus for the Ocean Development Department.

Activating the Inter-State Council and coincides the National Integration Council are also on the agenda.

On the Foreign Policy front, India will pursue a “proactive” engagement with neighbours to improve border management.
