Pranab hurt in accident : Undergoing treatment at Army Hospital
News Behind The News

April 09, 2007

Veteran Congress leader and External affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee who was injured in a road accident near Kolkata, was airlifted to New Delhi and admitted to Army Hospital on Sunday, April 8. Doctors treating him said he had broken his collarbone and

needed 22 stitches for a head wound. Mukherjee, 71, would be kept under observation for the next 48 hours.

Earlier in Kolkata, doctors and officials had said his injuries were not serious.

Mukherjee suffered injuries on head and other parts of the body when his car was hit by a truck on NH 34 when he was returning to Kolkata with other Congress leaders from Murshidabad district on Saturday night.

He was first rushed to Bethuadahari primary hospital where he was given 12 stitches on his head. After his condition became stable, he was rushed to Krishnagar hospital for further treatment.

Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader and WBPCC general secretary Manas Bhuniya and Pradyot Guha were also injured in the accident. Observers say the leaders of the two factions in the Delhi Congress will have to pay a heavy price for the party’s defeat in the MCD elections. While DPCC chief Ram Babu Sharma awaits the verdict of the high

command on whether he will stay on, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit may also be counting her days in office with rumours afloat in party circles that she may be replaced to prevent a re-run in the Assembly elections.

Sources said the main contender for the Chief Minister’s post may be her one-time protege, Union Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken. In view of the populist steps taken by Maken recently to increase the party’s rating amongst residents, such as implementing the Delhi Master Plan, 2021, Maken may well be brought in to improve the situation next year
