All five Rajya Sabha seats to be filled unopposed
The five Rajya Sabha seats from Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab are all set to be filled unopposed after the nomination papers of candidates, including former Union Finance Minister Manmohan Singh, were found valid.
In Haryana, the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) nominee, Mr. Rao Mansingh, is set to be elected unopposed after the rejection of the nomination papers of two Independent candidates - Mr. Kanwal Singh Bedhadhak and Mr. Daryao Singh. The vacancy arose following the death of former Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal.
In Punjab, the papers of BJP state unit vice-president Gurcharan Kaur, lone candidate in the fray, were found to be in order. While Dr. Manmohan Singh is set to be re-elected to the Rajya Sabha, the BJP’s Mr. Indramoni Bora will make his foray in the Rajya Sabha, also unopposed from Assam. For the lone Rajya Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh, Mr. Kalraj Mishra, who had filed four sets of papers on June 1, is set to enter the Upper House.
The last date of withdrawals for the June 11 elections is June 4.
