Judges will have to declare assets

Law Minister Veerappa Moily has said that the UPA government will make a new law for mandatory declaration of assets by Judges of the Supreme Court and the High Courts. At a meeting with media persons on June 26, he said that a Bill will be brought in the Budget session of Parliament, making it compulsory for the higher judiciary to declare assets and liabilities.

Justice B. Sudarshan Reddy of the Supreme Court will be the chairman of the three-member panel set up by the Rajya Sabha to look into the issue of impeachment proceedings against Justice Soumitra Sen of the Calcutta High Court. He has been nominated by Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan. This was announced by the Union Law Minister in New Delhi on June 26.

New Governors appointed

Former Law Minister H.R. Bhardwaj has been appointed the new Governor of Karnataka. He replaces Rameshwar Thakur who has been moved to Madhya Pradesh.

Devanand Konwar has been appointed Governor of Bihar and will replace R.L. Bhatia.

Mayawati goes on statue-unveiling spree

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati unveiled as many as fifteen statues on June 25. The statues and memorials are for Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Kanshi Ram and Mayawati herself. Over a thousand crore rupees has been pent on building these memorials.

Both the Congress and the Samajwadi party have criticized Mayawati for wasting public money on the statues. But Mayawati defended her Government’s decision saying that memorials dedicated to eminent persons provided inspiration to society for centuries.
