CBI moves fast against Mulayam

The CBI is reported to be moving fast in the investigation of disproportionate assets case against Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and some of his family members. An investigating team is camping in Lucknow and Safai, Mulayam’s native village. The CBI has asked the Samajwadi party chief to present himself before property evaluators in the DA case.

The Samajwadi Party has complained against what it called “the double standards” of the CBI with regard to Mulayam Singh Yadav and Railways Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati. Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh submitted a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to this effect.

Contrasting the carrot and stick treatment towards political friends and enemies, Amar Singh indirectly targeted the government in the letter to the Prime Minister. “Carrot to Lalu Prasad Yadav and Mayawati, who have been charge-sheeted after thorough investigation. Stick to Mulayam Singh Yadav.....This politics of carrot and stick does not augur well.”

Amar Singh pointed out that the CBI refused to file an appeal in the High Court against Lalu Prasad Yadav in the DA case. He alleged that the UP Governor who turned down the CBI request for sanction for prosecution of Mayawati, ignored the findings of the Supreme Court, Central Vigilance Commissioner and the CBI’s own investigating officer, who all concluded that there was a case against Mayawati.

Mayawati missile against Mulayam

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has said innocent people who suffered under the previous Samajwadi party regime and were not allowed to file criminal complaints could now lodge FIRs at police stations. The campaign to lodge criminal complaints will run for a month with special FIR counters being opened in the offices of district police chiefs. A government order to this effect was issued on Friday, June 22.

Addressing a press conference, Mayawati described the decision as fulfilment of her promise before the elections that her government would endeavour to secure justice for victims of the Samajwadi-sponsored jungle raj, if she was elected to power. She said the decision was taken in public interest to establish the rule of law.

Mayawati said action against mafiosi and the big fish would be taken after seeking legal opinion. Property looted by criminals and mafia during the previous regime would be freed from their clutches.

Two HUJI men nabbed in Lucknow

The Uttar Pradesh special task force (STF) has arrested two militants, including Jallauddin alias Amanullah Mandal alias Babu, an area commander of the Bangladesh-based terror group Harkat-ul-Jehad-Islami (HUJI) in Lucknow. The other arrested was identified as Naushad of Chak Uday Chand Village in Bijnore district. Babu confessed to have supplied explosives for the 2005 blasts in Varanasi, Delhi and Mumbai.

The STF seized a huge quantity of explosives and sophisticated weapons from their possession. The seizures included 9 kg of high explosives, 10 detonators, four timers, 20 hand grenades, one Chinese made pistol of 7.62 bore, one AK 47 and a large number of cartridges.

DGP G.L. Sharma told reporters at a press conference after the duo’s arrest on June 22 that Babu had one of his men to execute the Varanasi blast. “Babu’s name also figured in the Shramjeevi blast incident”, he added. His main job was to provide explosive materials to terror modules and select the target of the blasts. Babu had received training at a camp in Pakistan and was associated with HUJI since 2001.
