Paswan re-elected LJP president Union Minister Ramvilas Paswan has been re-elected president of his Lok Janshakti Party for a period of three years. The election took place at the party’s national executive meeting held in New Delhi on Dec. 26. The national executive passed a resolution demanding that Muslims be given reservation in government jobs in proportion to their population. Paswan said talks are going on with other parties to bring outfits other than the BJP, BSP and the Samajwadi Party, on a common platform in the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. Janata Dal (Secular) : More action in the split saga In a fresh move in the split saga in the Janata Dal (Secular), the party’s national executive has revoked the suspension of Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and 39 other MLAs from primary membership. They were suspended last year for forming a coalition government with the BJP. A meeting of the party’s national executive suspended veteran socialist Surender Mohan who was elected president by party rebels the previous week. The meeting appreciated that Kumaraswamy and others had not compromised on the party’s basic principle of secularism. The party rebels at their meeting in Thiruvananthapuram had earlier suspended former Prime Minister Deve Gowda from the party. Former Samata Party president Jaya Jaitley chargesheeted The CBI has charge-sheeted three persons including former Samata Party president Jaya Jaitley for allegedly receiving Rs. 2 lakh from fictitious representatives of an arms firm to influence defence deals. This is a follow up of the Tehelka expose which had brought out the corruption in defence deals during the National Democratic Alliance rule. The Samata Party has since merged with the Janata Dal (United). Tehelka.com reporters claiming to be agents of an arms firm had done a sting operation to expose corruption in defence deals. Liberhan Commission may get another extension The Liberhan Commission which has been probing the demolition of the Babri Masjid for the last 14 years is likely to get another extension, sources say. As per the last extension, the Commission was to submit its report to the Government by Dec. 31, 2006. During the Monsoon session of Parliament, Home Minister Shivraj Patil had assured the Lok Sabha that the Commission would submit its report by the end of the year. But it now appears that the Commission may need another extension to be able to submit its report. In all probability, a three-month extension may be given to the Commission.
