Relief for Karnataka Chief Minister : MLC drops charges

A BJP member of the Karnataka Legislative Council, Jnaradhan Reddy has retracted his allegation of bribe-taking against state Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. Reddy had earlier alleged that the Forest Minister had collected Rs. 150 crore from those engaged in illegal mining in Bellary district and passed it on to the Chief Minister. Janaradhan Reddy’s retraction came after Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa did the damage control exercise.

Addressing newspersons, the MLC said that he meant that day light robbery was being committed in the name of the Chief Minister.

Earlier, the Opposition had demanded the Chief Minister’s resignation and institution of a CBI probe into the bribery charges.

Narmada dam work to go on

The Supreme Court has declined to stop the Gujarat government from completing work on raising the height of the Sardar Sarovar Dam spillway to a uniform 119 metres. A bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Y.K. Sabharwal said that they find no reason to suspend the construction at this stage. The Narmada Bachao Andolan had opposed the decision to increase the spillway height.

The Centre earlier informed the Supreme Court that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was not in favour of issuing any direction at this stage to stop work on raising the height of the Narmada dam.
