North East: Tripura massacre : Attack on securitymen, 17 killed
News Behind The News

January 03, 2005

Militants of the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura (Biswamohan faction) ambushed two vehicles of para-military Territorial Army on Dec. 28, killing 17 people and injuring two persons at Dangabari in South Tripura district.

While 16 persons, including 13 Territorial Army jawans and one militant, were killed on the spot, three jawans were seriously injured. One jawan succumbed to his injuries on way to Amarpur hospital, the police said. Two General Engineering Reserve Force drivers were also among those killed. The jawans were in the area to provide security to the GREF personnel who were engaged in construction of Ambassa-Amarpur road in the remote area.

Superintendent of Police (operation) Nepal Das said that the militants snatched away 15 AK series rifles, one light machine gun along with huge cache of ammunition from the para-military force.

Nayanbasi role ruled out

Tripura police have ruled out the hand of the Nayanbasi faction of the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) in the attack. Highly placed sources in the police said the attack had been pulled off by a hit squad of the NLFT group led by Biswamohan Debbarma to reassert its authority before the autonomous district council (ADC) polls.

Tripura director-general of police (DGP) G.M. Srivastava said Nayanbasi had

gone back to Bangladesh to withdraw his money deposited with different banks of Bangladesh.

“Nayanbasi was frustrated over his failure to secure any political concession. However, his close lieutenants, Bartholomew Borok, Ananta Debbarma, Dilip Debbarma, Bimal Debbarma and Salka Borok had surrendered on December 25 with his consent,” Srivastava said. He said Nayanbasi had been offered a bait by certain elements to carry out further anti-India activities.

Nayanbasi is in dire straits in terms of personal finance as his Bangladeshi wife Tahera Bibi, daughter of a notorious robber in Srimangal area called Abu Mia, had run away with all his money, a source said. Sources said after backing out of the peace process, Nayanbasi is now moving from door to door in Dhaka to retrieve at least a part of his lost money.
