Thailand is going to witness the first ever North East Investment Week to be held there from October 1 to 4. A busi¬ness and trade delegation, led by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, will participate in the trade fair. The DoNER ministry has taken the initiative in this regard and the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) has been given the responsibility of hosting the event.
Industry and Power Minister Pradyut Bordoloi told the media in Guwahati on August 18 that after the Thailand meet, the Inter¬national Tea Convention will be held in November. This will be followed by the North East NRIs’ meet to be held in Guwahati in December.
“We are giving a thrust to the trade and commerce sectors and the scheduled events will hopefully provide a boost to Assam,” Bordoloi said. The Thailand meet was made possible by the recent visit of the Thai Commerce Minister.
Organisations related to trade and commerce, like Federation of Industries and Commerce of North Eastern Region, North Eastern Chamber of Commerce and Industry, North Eastern Small Scale Industries Association and Confederation of Indian Industries have been given the responsibility of preparing a list of repre¬sentatives to be included in the delegation.
Representatives from the construction, power, inland water¬ways, tourism, processed food, horticulture, rubber, information and technology, handloom and bamboo sectors would be a part of the delegation.
“The delegation will look for possible tie-ups with Thailand in these sectors,” Bordoloi pointed out. The Minister said that a cultural troupe from Assam would also be a part of the delega¬tion. He said that the two-day North East NRI meet will be held in Guwahati from December 2 and the CII has been asked to organ¬ise it. An organising committee, with Bordoloi at the helm of af¬fairs, has already been formed.
The Minister said that during his recent visit to the US and London, the Chief Minister met several non-resident Assamese. “There are roughly 6,000 NRIs who have excelled in different fields and are willing to help,” Bordoloi said. The meet would focus on the technological innovation to help Assam keep pace with the rest of the world.
Bordoloi said that technological advancement in power, healthcare, education, urban development, tourism and market channelling would be discussed during the meet. Regarding the International Tea Convention to be held simultaneously in Guwaha¬ti and Jorhat from November 22 to 24, the Minister said it would give an exposure to small tea growers.
