NDA to file petition against Laloo
News Behind The News

August 30, 2004

The National Democratic Alliance’s politics of confrontation against the UPA has been continuing. This time the NDA leaders from Bihar have decided to approach the Supreme Court with a PIL (public interest litigation) petition alleging that attempts are being made to influence the prosecution in the multi-crore fodder scam ever since prime accused Laloo Yadav became a Cabinet minister.

The BJP petitioners have alleged that deliberate attempts are being made to influence fair trial in the fodder scam cases going on in Patna and Ranchi courts, as prosecutors are being changed during the crucial stages of trial. Earlier they had submitted a petition to the Patna High Court and the Court had ordered that the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation, India’s premier investigation agency) would probe the fodder scam. Later the Supreme Court had entrusted the job of monitoring the investigation to the High Court.

In all, 60 cases were registered in the fodder scam. After Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar, 53 cases were transferred to the Ranchi courts and seven remained in Patna. It was done on the directions of the Supreme Court. Among these, Yadav is an accused in seven cases, which are in the final stages of trial. Five of them are going on in Ranchi and two in Patna.
