Naga peace talks : Advani briefed on the latest developments |
 |
Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani has been briefed of the latest developments in view of the expected return of the NSCN(IM) leaders, T. Muviah and Isak Chishi, to India for further round of talks on the Naga issue. The situation was reviewed at a high level meeting held in New Delhi on November 23. The meeting among others was attended by Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani, State Governor, Shyamal Dutta, IB chief R.K. Singh and Centre’s interlocutor N. Padmanabhaiah and Union Home Secretary N. Gopalaswamy. Chief Minister S.C. Jamir also called on Advani separately.
Th. Muivah and Isak Chisi Swu, the two top leaders of the outfit, are expected to arrive in India next month.
Padmanabhaiah declined comments on the discussions, but the Governor said he had appraised Advani of the “current situation” in the state. The Governor said there were reports of extortion being carried out by the outfit, but “such incidents were not too many”.
The Centre is understood to be of the view that opinions of all the sections of people mattered before reaching a decision on the decades-long insurgency in the state. A peace deal with the NSCN(I-M) has to have the approval of Jamir and his people as well, a source said.
Chief Minister S.C. Jamir had, for the better part of his tenure, opposed the NSCN. He is said to be close to the Khaplang faction of the NSCN, which is bitterly opposed to the one led by Muivah and Swu. The Centre is also talking to the Khaplang faction. Padmanabhaiah’s talks have only laid the foundation for the return of the NSCN leaders. The substantive talks will begin once the two leaders reach here, sources added.
