Myanmar military vigil along N-E border |
 |
Signalling its cooperation with New Delhi, Myanmar’s military has tightened its control on parts of the Indo-Myanmar border, seeking to block militants from Manipur who are slipping away from the Indian Army’s steady pressure. However, unlike the news reports last week, there appears to be no direct assault on camps of either the NSCN of the Khaplang faction or the ULFA. A prominent ULFA leader had claimed that they had indeed been hit and a leader of the Khaplang faction had also said that their camp had also been affected. But, diplomats in Yangon say that no direct operation had been launched because the problems are not seen a threat to the country although they are a headache for India.
There are a total of about 400 to 500 members of the various rebel groups from the North-East in various camps along the border. Myanmar’s President, Gen. Than Shwe, had recently visited India soon after the ouster and arrest of the then Prime Minister Khin Nyunt and promised to do everything the Government could do to dismantle the Northeastern insurgent groups’ bases on its territory.
