Myanmar extends Suu Kyi’s detention |
 |
The Police in Myanmar has informed the pro-democracy leader that her house arrest has been extended by one more year. She will now remained detained until Nov 27 next year. Ms Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the National League for Democracy, has been held since May 2003 by the military following junta following a clash between her supporters and a pro-Junta mob. Last week’s release of some 4000 prisoners including some pro-democracy leaders after the dismissal of Prime Minister Gen. Khin Nyunt and his replacement by Lt. Gen. Soe Win had raised hopes that she would also be released. But, a spokesman for the NLD said on Nov. 29 that police visited her lakeside villa in Yangon where she has been under house arrest since Sept. 26 last to tell her the detention had been extended.
Military junta sources say the Generals clearly intend to prevent Ms Suu Kyi from disrupting a national convention writing a new Constitution that the Government says will lead to democracy. “They cannot have her outside because the NLD with Suu Kyi would be a threat to the convention”, said a pro-junta political leader.
