News Behind The News

October 02, 2006

Five more people were convicted for their role in the 1993 Mumbai blast case on Friday, September 29. Gul Mohammed Noor Mohammed Shaikh, Mohammed Hanif Mohammed Usman Shaikh, Mohammed Sayed Mohammed Issac, Shaikh Ibrahim Shaikh and Shaikh Usman Man Khan – were found guilty of having undergone arms training in Pakistan before the 1993 Mumbai blasts and for attending a Dubai meeting between Dawood Ibrahim and Tiger Memon.

TADA court Judge P.D. Kode found these five people guilty based on their own confessions corroborated by other co-accused. Pronouncing them guilty, Kode said though the five were a part of the larger conspiracy, they were not directly involved. This was why they had been released on bail in 1998. Following the conviction, the bail bonds of all five were cancelled and the jail authorities were directed to take them into custody. Earlier on September 25 Iqbal Yusuf Shaikh and Nasim Barmare were found guilty. On Sept. 26 Constables Vijay Patil, Ashok Muneshwar, Pandarinath Mahadik, Ramesh Mali and Srikrishna Pashilkar were convicted. Three others were acquitted. On Sept 27, Mushtaq Tarani was convicted. On Sept. 28, Sarfaraz Dawood Phanse was convicted, five other accused acquitted.
