Mizoram : Stringent norms to check Bangladeshi influx
News Behind The News

November 06, 2006

Stepping up the move to check the influx of Bangladeshis into the state, the Mizoram government has clamped further restrictions on the entry of non-Mizos from adjoining Barak Valley districts of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailiakandi through the Vairengte and Bharabhi checkgates.

In a notification released on Nov. 2, the state’s liaison cell at Silchar stated that from now on, non-Mizos would have to submit proof of citizenship before entering Mizoram.

Applicants intending to visit Mizoram would have to submit a certificate issued either by the panchayat zilla parishad or the municipality, stating their voter’s list serial number, polling booth and the holding number of their residence. A senior official of the home department of the Mizoram government at Aizawl disclosed that such restrictions were imposed to prove the authenticity of anyone visiting the state.

He pointed out that inner line permit would be issued only after production of necessary documents. The official clarified that such entry restrictions would be rigorously applied while screening the applications of people from the Barak Valley. However, tourists and businessmen would be dealt with more liberally, he added.

Intelligence agencies in Cachar confirmed the modus operandi of the Bangladeshis of first settling down in the Barak Valley areas after managing to slip across the border and then sneaking into adjacent Mizoram for earning a living.
