Mizoram : Plan to rehabilitate Reang refugees
News Behind The News

March 28, 2005

The Mizoram government proposes to rehabilitate Reang refugees, now staying in relief camps in Tripura, in the northwest of the state instead of their original clusters of habitation in case it signs a peace accord with the militant Bru National Liberation Front (BNLF).

A senior home department official said if the next round of talks to be held in Aizawl in early April fructifies, the government would rehabilitate the refugees in their houses with the aid of the Rs 75-crore phased grant pledged by the Centre.

The Brus had been forced to flee Mizoram in 1997 to escape the riots sparked between the Mizos and their tribe following the Reangs’ demand for an autonomous district council.
