Meghalaya : Push to ANVC peace talks - Church, NGOs join hands |
 |
In a much-needed push to the peace process between the proscribed Achik National Volunteers Council (ANVC) and New Delhi, various church leaders have joined hands with NGOs to form a united Achik Peace Forum.
The forum, which was formed recently at the North Eastern Hill University (Nehu) campus in Tura, will ensure that the peace process between the ANVC and the Centre, which started a year back, is not derailed.
The committee will be headed by Grover Marak, president of Garo Baptist Church as its president, Rev. Charles Sangma of the Roman Catholic Church as its vice-president, Sengrak Marak of the Federation of Achik Freedom as its secretary and Rakkam M. Sangma of the Joint Action Committee of Garo Hills as its joint secretary.
The members of the forum said the present situation arising out of allegations and counter-allegations between the ANVC and the government did not augur well for the peace process.
The government has accused the ANVC of violating the ceasefire ground rules by organising different kinds of activities all over Garo Hills, whereas the latter has questioned the government’s sincerity on starting the actual talks.
