Meghalaya politics : Sonia stands by Rymbai
News Behind The News

July 31, 2006

Former Meghalaya Chief Minister D.D. Lapang and his supporters made a last-ditch attempt on July 28 to convince Congress president Sonia Gandhi to dislodge J.D. Rymbai from the hot seat.

However, AICC sources said the present configuration of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) is unlikely to be disturbed.

AICC sources are of the view that the high command is not interested in dislodging the Rymbai-led dispensation in Meghalaya. One of them said Sonia Gandhi has reiterated her decision to “address the problem” without disturbing the present combination under Rymbai during her meeting with Lapang and his supporters.

A handout faxed from New Delhi on July 28 claimed that the Congress president Sonia Gandhi separately met Lapang and all those supporting him. She reportedly promised them that she would look into the matter.

Sources in the Congress said most of the Ministers in the Rymbai ministry too are not happy with his leadership and have expressed their support for the group campaigning for “another change.” Rymbai said he had been “back-stabbed” by the very legislators who had propped him up.

The Chief Minister is known to be a man of few words, but he did not hold back on July 25. “I was always with Lapang, even when his leadership was challenged,” he told the media. “Those who made me Chief Minister are now back-stabbing me.”

On what transpired at the meeting between him and Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi last week, Rymbai said: “I was asked about dissent by some MLAs, but I thought everything was under control and that is what I told the AICC president. I told her that I would visit all district headquarters and monitor development activities as I felt that there was no serious problem.”
