Meghalaya : Militant spills Bangla tie-up
News Behind The News

May 19, 2008

The Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), the militant outfit active in Meghalaya, has tied up with the Manip¬ur-based militant group, the Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), in Bangladesh for assistance in cash and kind.

A senior police official said on May 16 that both the militant groups had formed the tie-up since a long time and the co-ordination was limited only to their camps in Bangladesh.

Meghalaya police received information about the tie-up from surrendered HNLC rebels. The HNLC aims at maintaining co-ordina¬tion with the KYKL so that it can seek its help in an emergency.

“The camps of the KYKL and the HNLC are adjacent and whenev¬er the HNLC runs short of money, rice and other essential commod¬ities, it seeks the help of the other camp,” the police official said.

More than 150 HNLC militants have surrendered so far, weak¬ening the militant outfit over the years. Moreover, the busting of several finance cells of the outfit has also caused a setback. The police said there are around 30 HNLC rebels in the main camp, Aru Sumer, located in the Chittagong Hills Tracts of Bangladesh.

A scarcity of funds and arms had prompted the HNLC to main¬tain links with National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) militants.

The HNLC rebels borrow weapons from the NLFT and seek the assistance of its cadres for extortion, especially in Jaintia Hills. Last month, the police had busted a joint make shift camp of both HNLC and NLFT along the Jaintia Hills border adjacent to Assam. However, there are no reports so far of the HNLC and KYKL engaging in any extortion drives in Meghalaya.
