Meghalaya : In-fighting in the ruling Congress, CM may be out |
 |
Meghalya witnessed serious in-fighting in the ruling Congress last week, and there are reports that Chief Minister J.D. Rymbai is on his way out.
On Thursday, Jan. 18, as many as 28 Congress MLAs gathered at Pinewood Hotel to cast their votes in a secret ballot to decide whether Rymbai would stay on as Chief Minister of Meghalaya.
All 28 votes were sealed in an envelope and taken to New Delhi by AICC secretary in charge of Meghalaya, Ved Prakash. The AICC had sent Prakash to Shillong to conduct the secret ballot. Veteran Congress old guard and External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee was despatched to the state capital to oversee the developments.
The secret ballot was held to end the leadership tussle between Rymbai and Lapang. The winner of the ballot will become the Chief Minister till the Assembly elections, slated for next year.
Though the results of the secret ballot are not out yet, rumours are already doing the rounds that “Lapang is leading by three votes.” The Meghalaya Congress has a total of 29 MLAs in a 60-member Assembly.
