Meghalaya : Garo hills agitation called off |
 |
The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) has called off all its agitation programmes to pave a way out of the Meghalaya Board of School Education impasse.
The decision, taken by the students’ union in Tura on December 10, lifts the hungerstrike launched by it on December 5 and the ban imposed on the entry of 24 legislators into Garo hills.
Welcoming the GSU’s move, Chief Minister D.D. Lapang said: “We need the cooperation of NGOs to celebrate our festivals in a nice environment”.
Reiterating the need to maintain peace and harmony in the state, the Chief Minister assured his government’s support in resolving the differences arising between different sections of the Garo hills and the Khasi hills over the school board issue.
The GSU has been protesting against the Congress-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government’s decision to amend the Meghalaya Board of School Education Act, 1973, so as to restructure and revamp the board.
Earlier, the students’ union had launched a non-cooperation movement in Garo hills, following the death of nine persons in police firing in Tura and Williamnagar on September 30.
