Meghalaya : Cong leaders huddle to tide over crisis |
 |
In Meghalaya, confusion over the change in leadership in the ruling Congress continues, with AICC emissary Maj. (retd) Ved Prakash holding closed-door discussions with Congress legislators. Prakash, who is camping in Shillong, had met 22 legislators out of the 29 party MLAs till August 7. Seven members are said to be out of station. Chief minister J.D. Rymbai and former Chief Minister D.D. Lapang are among the prominent leaders who met Prakash.
While members in both the camps are tightlipped about the developments, sources said there would be a cabinet reshuffle to accommodate some disgruntled “senior” leaders so that the party would tide over the present crisis.
Prakash attended the PCC executive committee meeting held at Congress Bhavan on August 8 to gauge the pulse of the party. The meeting, which was attended by almost all the executive members, felt that the present leadership crisis would tarnish the image of the party.
BJP fishing in troubled waters of Meghalaya
Meanwhile, the major Opposition party, the BJP, taking advantage of the infighting in the Congress, has appealed to all the regional parties to come together and form a new government in Meghalaya.
B.B. Chettri, senior vice-president of the BJP’s Meghalaya unit, termed the Congress as a bunch of power-hungry people. The development work, which is minimal in the state, has come to a standstill.
Chettri said the state government is also confused with the latest developments. He urged all parties to unite and form a stable government. Chettri requested the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), Independents and the NCP to join hands, overcoming their differences.
At present, the MDA, a coalition of the Congress and other regional parties, is at the helm of affairs in Meghalaya. The Congress, the largest party in the coalition with 29 members, is passing through rough weather for the past three months with dissidence growing in the party.
