Meghalaya : AICC open to change, says Lapang |
 |
In a bid to redeem his own image as well as that of his loyalists, former Meghalaya Chief Minister D.D. Lapang on August 4 claimed the party high command had taken their grievances seriously and party observers would visit the state capital soon to take a decision on a change in leadership.
Speaking to the media, Lapang said he had no differences with present Chief Minister J.D. Rymbai and rubbished reports to the contrary.
“The media sometimes reports sense and sometimes nonsense,” Lapang quipped.
He also said that when some legislators, unhappy with Rymbai’s leadership, approached him, he personally advised the Chief Minister to sort out the issue with the disgruntled group. It was only when the problem could not be solved that the legislators went to New Delhi to apprise the AICC leaders of their grievances, he said. Lapang was then summoned to the capital as all the dissatisfied MLAs wanted the Congress Legislature Party’s reins to be restored to him, he said.
On the AICC ruling out a change in the Meghalaya ministry, Lapang said that after several meetings with Oscar Fernandez and other leaders, Sonia Gandhi had finally agreed to look into their demand and take a decision at the “appropriate time”.
He dismissed the possibility of a split in the party and reiterated the need for all its members to work together as a family.
Lapang also lashed out at regional parties which passed a resolution recently, stating that frequent changes in the leadership of the party would hinder the progress of the state.
